The Punjab government has started taking action against the owners of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations for filling less gas in vehicles. The labour department during February challaned 21 owners of CNG stations in Rawalpindi and also sealed two stations on the charges.
Motorists told ‘The News’ that many CNG stations are filling less gas in vehicles and charging full payment. Majority of the CNG stations having no fixed computerised meters easily deceive motorists while filling less gas.
They say that gas prices are already high and they are unable to afford less gas against full payment.
Special Magistrate of the labour department Fazal Hussain, who is checking CNG stations for the violations, admitted that many stations are involved in the illegal practice.
He said that they had challaned 21 gas stations and also imposed fine on two CNG stations under Weight and Measurement Act of Pakistan 1975. The less gas filling was checked through a ‘special micro-meter’, which exposes corruption of the CNG stations, he said.
He said the CNG stations challaned were located in Pirwadhai, Adiala Road, Chungi No-22, Benazir Bhutto Road, Pindora, Jhelum Road and Tipu Road. He said that the CNG stations use different tricks to rob the public, but we have the modern machines to check such violations.
All Pakistan CNG Stations Association Chairman Ghayas Abdullah Piracha said that concerned authorities should taake strict action against violators and should seal the CNG stations adding that the association would not back owners of such stations. He said ‘black sheep’ are present in every department.
A senior staff member of a CNG station in Pirwadhai, on condition of anonymity, told ‘The News’ that they could not do this on their own rather do it on the instructions of owners. “I know how to increase speed of the meter and how to slow it down.”
Almost all stations have fixed computerised meters, but sometime on the directions of bosses they turn them off to earn more and more profit, he said.
Muhammad Aslam, a motorist, said that majority of stations fill less gas. He said that staff of CNG stations stop button at Rs99 and Rs98 but charge Rs100. |
